Submissions
Contributions to PJNS are welcome in the following categories:
Reviews – These are authoritative, evidence-based articles
on topical subjects. Submission in this category is generally by invitation; however,
unsolicited manuscripts are also welcome. Authors are encouraged to discuss an outline
of their idea with the relevant editor in their specialty. No abstract
needed. Word length 2,000-3,000; up to 20 references.
Original Papers – These are articles describing original research
that holds some relevance to the nervous system. Manuscript should be organized
into Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion. A structured
abstract (Background, Objectives, Methods, Results and Conclusions) of up to 250
words is required. Word length 4,000 max.; up to 25 references.
Issues in Clinical Practice
– These are short papers providing
discussion and analysis on practical issues relevant to contemporary clinical practice.
Word length 1,000-1,500; up to 10 references.
Issues in Basic Neuroscience
– These are short papers providing informative review and commentary on topics in
any aspect of basic neuroscience including systems neuroscience, cellular and molecular
neuroscience, developmental neuroscience, neuro-pharmacology, and computational
neuroscience. Word length 1,000-1,500
words; up to 10 references.
Frontiers of Technology
– These are introductory notes describing
cutting-edge technologies relevant to any aspect of neuroscience – basic, clinical,
or applied – in a manner accessible to non-specialists. Word length 1,000-1,500
words; up to 10 references.
Neuro-Images – These are visual displays of interesting material
relevant to clinical or basic neuroscience. Typical content in this category includes
neuro-radiologic images, electrophysiologic tracings, intraoperative photographs,
and clinical photographs, as well as photo-micrographs or other visually eloquent
display of neuroscientific data. A caption of up to 100 words is required with each
image. Up to 3 references may be included.
Case Discussions – These are case reports illustrating any novel
or interesting aspect in diagnosis or management of neurological, neurosurgical
or psychiatric illness.
Word length 1,500 words; up to 10 references.
Perspectives – These are articles based on personal viewpoints
articulated through opinion, debate or controversy. Topics should be of broad interest.
Word length 1,000 words; up to 5 references.
Book Reviews – These are critical appraisals of books that would
hold interest for professionals in any neuroscience field. Submission in this category
is generally by invitation; however, unsolicited manuscripts are also welcome. Word
length 500 words
Letters to the Editor – These include correspondence related to
material published in PJNS, as well short scientific or clinical communications.
Word length 400 words; up to 3 references
All authors are referred to the “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted
to Biomedical Journals” (N
Engl J Med 1997;336:309-15) for style, format and layout.
It is assumed that submitted manuscripts will not be under review elsewhere. Only
individuals making substantial contribution to the content of a paper should be
included as authors. Generic drug names and SI units (except for blood pressure
in mmHg and hemoglobin in g/dL) should be used throughout. All submissions (except
Letters to the Editor) should be accompanied by a brief covering note explaining
why the paper is suitable for PJNS and identifying the appropriate editor
for the work. In addition, all submissions (except Letters to the Editor) should
begin with a title page including title of the paper, list of authors’ names, institutional
or organizational affiliation, and contact information for the corresponding author.
